There was a full moon on February 19th. Frosty and I decided to go for a moonlit outing. We used our new skis. This also gave us some practice using them close to home.<\/p>\n

Frosty Making Fresh Tracks<\/p><\/div>\n

The skis, by Black Diamond<\/a>, are made for backcountry travel in ungroomed, non-trail areas without much elevation. The bindings can be used with your regular boots. The straps fasten down with a ratchet-like motion. They were very easy to put on.<\/p>\n

The Bindings Were Easy to Use<\/p><\/div>\n

We headed to the snowmobile trail that goes through our backyard. After following the snowmobile trail for awhile, we \u00a0headed onto an old, unplowed dirt road that was overgrown in spots with vegetation. The road was covered with a few inches of powder topped with a very thin icy crust. The skis worked really well in this untouched snow.<\/p>\n

We also went ski bushwhacking. The skies worked well, but the protruding tree branches, thorn bushes, and other vegetation slowed our progress.<\/p>\n

Some of the time we used our headlamps, while at other times we skied with only the moon to light our way. Being out at night was a calming and beautiful experience. The snow was sparkling like magic pixie dust was sprinkled all over it. While skiing, you could hear the crusty snow breaking with each glide of the ski. There was a stillness to everything and a heavy quiet, when we stopped moving.<\/p>\n

Looking Back on Our Tracks Through the Snow<\/p><\/div>\n

We saw rabbit tracks, mouse tracks, and deer tracks. We also saw an area where a deer had bedded down. The stars were beautiful, the moon was nice, and the air was practically windless. A great night to be out.<\/p>\n
